Organizational Culture
Gene One CEO's goal to proceed with an IPO dismisses the culture that has been prominent in the organization since its inception. As a startup company Gene One has become a driving force in the biotech field because of its commitment to research and technology. By requiring specific growth targets of two new technology breakthroughs and 6 new innovative products, employees are forced to deliver results on a schedule, rather than uncovering breakthrough technology with intense research and development. By pleasing stockholders, quality may be sacrificed for quantity. "Corporate culture is one of the main drivers of employee commitment and engagement." (McShane & Von Glinow, 2005, Ch. 16)
Cooperation versus Competition
During the CEO meeting with the leadership team there was clear competition between Michelle and Teri. Sarcastic remarks and negativity bounced between them regarding whose job is more important. Teri accused Michelle of not having enough challenges in finance, and butting into the research field giving unwanted advice. "Cooperation is superior to competition in promoting achievement and productivity. Cooperation is superior to individualistic efforts in promoting achievement and productivity." (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2004, Ch. 13)
The Open Systems Anchor
Gene One's success as a company depends on the environment. Profitability and continued presence in the market depend on raw materials, information and the Food and Drug Administration. The outputs of Gene One are valued by the external customers and they must take into consideration customer demand and concerns. "Organizations are open systems because they take their sustenance from the environment and, in turn, affect that environment through their output." (McShane & Von Glinow, 2005, Ch. 1)
