After reading Kirk's and Brownback's articles on Conservatism, I found myself agreeing with some of the principles. However, what conservatives say and do is a totally different story. Conservatives say they want to limit the government's control over our personal lives but push for laws like the Patriot Act to eavesdrop on our private lives. Brownback wants more compassion in out federal government but why were the conservatives in power so slow to help Katrina victims? It's not like the hurricane came out of nowhere. The government knew weeks in advance the storm was coming. After days of delay, the government finally sent some supplies which were designed to protect from terrorist attacks not for saving lives.

I agree with Kirk's principle that for a society to work each citizen must believe in moral order. A society can't thrive with individuals who ignore or go against these moral codes for a pursuit of self gratification. It's the role of the government to help maintain and support morality and ethics throughout the nation. I believe our government now has strayed away from morality by torturing terrorist. I thought we were a nation against torturing any prisoners of war, regardless of how our enemies were treating our imprisoned soldiers. Now, conservatives are pushing bills advocating torture of enemy forces. The government is basically stooping down to the terrorist level by advocating torture. How many other moral and ethical laws will we push aside for the conservative's satisfaction? If we go astray from our nations established moral and ethical codes, I believe we will go into anarchy.
