Being a manager takes a great deal of hard work, dedication, and persistence. In order to achieve the goal of becoming a CEO, necessary skills of a manager must be developed and then achieve the skills and confidence to succeed. Since managers are leaders, leadership skills and cross-functional leadership skills must be developed. Lehman Brothers, a global investment bank, emphasizes the importance of “leadership potential and initiative, as well as problem solving and technical skills.” The management training program will provide a plan of action to strategize and grasp all the necessary skills in a short time to fulfill the goal of becoming the CEO.
First and foremost, managers must identify weaknesses, polish up strengths, and learn new ideas and concepts that will improve their leadership qualities. Developing leadership qualities includes perfecting a key set of management skills; conceptual skills, interpersonal skills, technical skills, and political skills. It is important to use interpersonal skills to work with management team members in the program and to listen to ideas and opinions. “Without strong interpersonal skills, then it is not possible to be a successful manager.”
The manager would develop conceptual skills a CEO would encompass to have the vision and determination through the logical thinking process. Also, learning how other people think and accepting the differences that exist would assist in managing them. This would give credibility to the manager as a person who is not afraid to think out of the box and to tread paths that are not always the norm. An amicable environment must be created where people are not afraid to communicate, manage resources and apply ideas and theories to lead the team as much as possible. At the same time, promote empowerment so that employees think for themselves which will give them a sense of importance of belonging to the firm. By taking the initiative to volunteer to lead the members without being tyrannical, colleagues would evaluate that I have good overall leadership qualities.
Decision making is the key responsibility of being a leader. A good decision maker knows how to assess the problems, come up with a variety of solutions and evaluate the most effective solutions. In learning how to assess conflicts, variables in the company should be addressed to achieve the best resolution. In order to decipher the factors that are relevant to key decisions, it is imperative to understand which criterion is more important to Skilos Inc. The company may have factors that are fixed and unchangeable because they run the key parts of the business. There may be other factors that are variable and not as important, which could be used as part of solutions. The bottom line is whether the fixed or variable aspect is eventually changed, it is important to understand all the elements which are driving the business in order to find the best solution from the big picture. After finding the answer to the problem the next step would be to discover how to execute decisions effectively so that the decision would be the greatest conclusion for Skilos Inc. In the end, the decision must be confidently executed and the evaluation will reflect the detailed planning that has taken place with the company’s goals used as good measure.
In order to appreciate the company’s goals on a macro level a CEO needs to learn the culture, mission, direction and vision of the company. Being familiar with the environment, the departments and the company’s direction, a CEO would use the vision and mission as measuring tools to internally distinguish the rights and wrongs that are going on within Skilos Inc. Also, it is essential that a CEO learns about the shareholders and from the finance department the kind past and present of macro level investments that have occurred along with the and overall cash flow of the company. This will provide the executive an idea of the financial instruments that are available to company should the need arises in the future.
Organization is another skill that is important to develop during the management training program. During this program, the CEO should refine the process of being able to gather and uphold a variety of information, sort out the relevant facts, develop findings, draw conclusions, and make final recommendations. Organization of staff, of projects, and daily duties are simple but also necessary skills to refine. Strong organizational skills are essential for any project management opportunities as well.
It is necessary to build and develop technical skills through mastering complex systems and working with a variety of technologies. Each of these abilities are based on specialized knowledge or expertise. The knowledge level of the CEO would be related to the industry of framostats; a proprietary item that’s a required component of every car and airplane made in the world, and understanding the organizations manufacturing processes and the product that Skilos Inc. is manufacturing.
Also a CEO should create key relationships to gain political skills in which managers’ ability to build a power base and make the right connections. Since organizations constantly compete for resources, it is essential that I have good political skills. A CEO with political skills will be able to make the right connections, build relationships and get more resources for their groups.
Lastly, a CEO must establish ethics by exercising good moral judgment and establish personal integrity. CEOs are the “keepers of the values” of their organizations and should act as the organizational role model. Also overall familiarity of rules and structures of the company will promote regulations and ethics within the work environment.
