Marijuana Legalization

Do you think marijuana should be legalized? For years, this topic has been the center of many debates. Marijuana is the herbal form of the Indian hemp plant Cannabis Sativa. It contains a chemical known as THC. THC has been known to inflict severe cell damage. This chemical is capable of causing nerve cell abnormalities, alter cell division, and weaken cell immunity (GWired 1). Despite the fact that marijuana is illegal, many people still continue to use it. Because of the continued illegal use, some people are beginning to wonder if marijuana is dangerous enough to remain illegal. Marijuana should be legalized. My first reason why marijuana should be legalized is because legalizing marijuana can help reduce the black market activities. Another reason is that keeping marijuana illegal doesn’t help. My last reason is that marijuana isn’t more harmful than alcohol or tobacco.

Marijuana should be legalized because it can decrease the activities of the black market. Marijuana dealers depend on the drugs’ illegalization to gain profit from selling (Messerli 1). By legalizing marijuana, its value would decline, eventually enough to put most marijuana dealers out of business. On the other hand, some people feel that even though it will reduce black market activities, it will not completely put the black market out of business. My answer to this is that it’s impossible to completely remove the black market from this world. However, by legalizing marijuana, we will be able to control who purchases the drug. Even though the black market will still continue survive, they will no longer be able to sell marijuana to random people.

Keeping marijuana illegal doesn’t help. People think that keeping marijuana illegal can keep teens from obtaining the drug, however this is not true. In order to buy alcohol, a person has to be at least 21 years old, yet teens still manage to obtain them (Organization 13). There is no age limit to keep teens from buying
