The term mass media refers to the channels of communication that exist to reach a large public audience. Mass media includes newspaper, magazines, television, radio, and more recently, the internet. The mass media is an important part of our life. In the following parts, I will elaborate the reason.

One important function of mass media is entertainment. Most popular entertainment is television. On television, there are extensive variety of entertainment programs, ranging from soap operas, to comedy, to talk show and sport. For example, the amount of time that American people spend in front of television sets varies with age, gender and education, but on average it amounts to three to four hours a day.

Another function of mass media is provide warnings. These warnings provide up-to-the-minute information on the location and alert people to take the necessary precautions. Without such warnings there would be a danger of loss of life and property. For instance, The BBC uses a four-tiered flood warning system to make alerts, if there is the chance of a flood near where we live, work, or are planning on traveling to, we will be aware of the current situation and the chances of it developing further.

A further function of the mass media is help to shape the public opinion. The mass media not only report the results of public opinion surveys conducted by outside organizations but also increasingly incorporate their own polls into their news coverage.

Research has shown that the positions Americans take on critical issues are influenced by the media, especially when the media air divergent views and provide in-depth analysis.

A further function of the mass media is socialization. The mass media, most significantly through its news, reporting, and analysis, affects what and how we learn about politics and our own political views. Television is a part of the process by which people learn society's
