Response Paper: The Matrix
The Matrix is a film that utilizes a requiring theme in films and literature, with an unorthodox twist on the idea. The premise of the film is simple enough to understand, although the plot in relation to the story can sometimes be difficult to comprehend. The film powerfully illustrates the importance of finding meaning in ones life. In trying to grasp what the Wachowski brothers were trying to convey through the film, the following is my understanding of the films meaning.
In the film, Morpheus makes a reference to the Alice in Wonderland, in a sense the film is a lot like the story. Dealing with plenty of cosmic ironic themes, in an attempt to storm the viewer with question of their existence. The film of course, triumphs in illustrating the struggle between two characters and the struggle between the protagonist and himself. The Matrix shows technology as the down fall of human society, again bringing another theme into what already seems to be a movie overflowing with themes.
Finding the meaning of life has long been the hope and aspiration of many philosophers and scientist alike. Religion and God sometimes fall short in giving us the true purpose of our existence. This film invokes thought, about love and death, freedom and enslavement, accepting the truth and reveling in a lie. More importantly, Neo's destiny is unavoidable, bringing to mind the realization of fate in a simulated and real word. The Wachowski brothers, succeed in invoking deep thought and self-realization.
The world as we now it, was viewed as a simulated computer program designed to keep the human race complacent. In the film the world is viewed as a virtual play place for those with the will to bend the rules of this construct, by the realization that the world does not truly exist. The Matrix is a huge metaphor for the real word crying out for free thought not influenced by the media or restrained
