In the early hours of Tuesday morning a NSW couple nearly lost everything including their lives in a devastating fire. a resident who lived in the building says “I had no idea what was going. I was woken up by a neighbor who lives across the apartment. I could see smoke steaming out of the window once I got outside”. An investigation shows that the fire was on the ground level of a nine level apartment building  and an unextinguished cigarette  was the cause of the fire.

 If it wasn’t  for quick thinking of a woman who lived in the across from the apartment building who says “ I felt really sorry for the couple who lost their unit. I went to get a drink of water in the middle of the night when I noticed the flames on the balcony of the unit and called the fire and rescue service immediately. They had only been living there for a little while”. The couple who had only been living in their Chippendale apartment a little while where not responsible enough with discarding their cigarette butts and no smoke alarms to warn them if a fire does ignite. Fire warden Daniel fletcher  says “ a number of residents needed assistance with breathing and some people were taken to the hospital for observation.”

 

Paramedics set up a triage a block over and assessed each person one by one, two were taken to hospital for breathing troubles and two for burns. After fire and rescue searched the apartment and extinguished the fire they declared the apartment destroyed.

A resident who lived in the building where the blaze occurred says “ the smoke was so thick as we exited the building. I had trouble breathing for a while but the fire and rescue officers were wonderful giving me and a few others personal gas masks.” The investigation is ongoing whether or not the couple that lived in the apartment will be charged
