A number of misconceptions about computer science and
professionals in computer science are common today among the computer
majors, including students of all ages. Some of these ideas are
misconceptions which present a negative image of the field, and may
discourage some students, especially females and minorities from pursuing a
course of study or career in computer science. The number of women
entering computer science and information technology has been declining,
while the demand for professionals in these fields has grown. Furthermore
some of the things that I believe that people think about people in computers
is that all you do is fix problems or anything that goes wrong with a
computer, think that all people know what their doing just because their in
the computer field, computer majors are all dorks or geeks, that the least
expensive way is the best way out, they can also believe that it is more about
computer hardware. Most of the time you can additionally think that
computer scientists do their work alone at a desk also they think that
computer majors make a lot of money when in reality none of this is true.
Sometimes people fix errors within the computer but majority of the time we
spend our time doing preventative maintenance so things don't ruin
something. We also have to keep everything up to date, all the security is up
to date. You also have to make sure everyone knows how to use existing
programs and new programs. You also have to make sure that no one is
doing anything to ruin any of the programs or data on the system. And quite
frankly not all people know what they are doing on a computer even though
they have a degree in it. Furthermore all computer majors are not dorks or
geeks, of course there are plenty of them we all are not just look at me for
example. I'm the farthest away from a dork or geek. I like computers and
that is what interests me so that is what I want to pursue in my career, I don't
care about all the money I could be making in another field. My mother and
father always taught me to do what I loved not what pays the best because
even if you were getting paid all the money in the world it wouldn't make
you happy if it isn't what you wanted to do. You might in addition believe
that writing programs is what you have to do or work with application
programs. And you might not have to do any of these things it's all
considering what kind of job you get. Nor do you have to be a mathematical
wiz. A final misconception I can think of is the job lifetime. Many people
think that you are worth a lot and always employable. This is not the case.
