In order to explain the nature of logic as it relates to critical thinking, we should break each word down by defining them. Let’s start with the nature of, meaning having character or qualities of, according to dictionary.com. Logic when defined by dictionary.com has several parts to it. Logic is the (1) science that investigates the principles governing correct or reliable inference; (2) a particular method of reasoning or argumentation; (3) the system or principles of reasoning applicable to any branch of knowledge or study; (4) reason or sound judgement, as utterances or actions; or (5) convincing forcefulness such as inexorable truth or persuasiveness. Last but not least also defined by dictionary.com is critical thinking. Critical thinking is the process actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information to reach an answer or conclusion (www.dictionary.com, 2008).
Although we may not realize it everyone uses critical thinking in his or her everyday lives. Within this critical thinking logic and logical processes are also used in order to make the best decision or choice. As we all may have our own perception of different situations due to past experiences the outcomes may vary. The process of critical thinking is very important when making a decision in our lives, careers, or for our families. Critical thinking should be used by everyone in their everyday lives in order to have a positive outcome to a situation or problem using logical or critical processes which will eliminate making mistakes or resulting with disastrous consequences. I know I have personally had these types of outcomes in the past due to basing my decision on perception.
In 2000, not to long after graduating high school and working a part-time waitress job making practically nothing I moved to Dallas. After moving to Dallas I started working full-time at Wal-Mart making $8.00/hour compared to my $2.15/hour plus tips. Being a teenager never earning this much in the past I felt I was on top of the world. I was left in charged temporarily due to my manager at the time receiving a promotion. Therefore, I started to work about 60-70 hour weeks making my checks huge well at least I thought at that time. I would make about $1,300 every two weeks. I saved up a few thousand in the bank, had credit cards, extra cash each check, constantly shopped, and I purchased a brand new car. I had no worries in the world, didn’t think of the future consequences I may have if I would lose my job. In my mind I had it all, everything was great, “I thought to myself what could happen I am young.” A few months after purchasing my brand new car I suffered a knee injury at work. This injury
