In Southeast Asian countries, a car is consider a luxury things that only the rich could afford. Therefore, in Most of the Southeast Asian countries including Indonesia, motorbikes are preferable. Most motorbikes belong to a family and not just a single member of the household. The motorbike is used to do drive carpool to school, pick up the daily groceries, and even go for a family trip out of the city
In Indonesia, especially in Jakarta, a motorbike service is called an Ojek. An Ojek, or a motorbike taxi, is a motorcyclist that offers rides to wherever you want to go. Ojek is a quite popular mode of transport in Jakarta, because:
- Some of public transportation in Jakarta is not connected well and Jakarta isn’t that pleasurable to walk around. Why? Because the infrastructure of Jakarta is not intended for pedestrian because of the location from A to B is quite far to reach and some of the places in Jakarta is not safe for pedestrian.
- The traffic in Jakarta is hard to deal with. For this reason, getting an Ojek is a solution to where you want to go as quickly as possible and of course with a cheaper price rather using a taxi. It is just so easy to go anywhere with Ojek.
Using an Ojek, back then, has a several drawbacks. First, it is not efficient, because we must find the Ojek base.
Second, the problem with getting an Ojek comes when you are a tourist (or not familiar with certain areas) in Jakarta. When you are about to use an Ojek service, bargaining is a must. Never ever take an Ojek before you agree on how much you will pay for the service. Since you don’t speak the language, bargaining can be difficult. Even though, for those that speak the (Indonesian) language, bargaining is tricky. You also need to know how much you should pay. You need to know the distance between your departure point to your arrival point and the supply-demand of Ojek in that area. Both things that even locals don’t always know.
Third, lack of safeties, people often experience a criminal issue while their using an Ojek.
Nadiem Makarim, CEO of Go-jek, found all these problem, and find the solution that they collaborate their new innovative business model with the traditional Ojek taxi. Then came Go-jek, with their tagline “An Ojek For Every Need”.
Go-jek service is their Uber like service where you can book a Go-jek to take you from point A to point. Using technology, drivers who would otherwise be sitting around or hustling for fares, can now be booked just like a regular taxi. All they need is smartphone. By this, it is cover the problem that you don’t have to waste your time and energy to find an Ojek base which makes things more effective and efficient at the same time for the users and the drivers.
Go-jek also aims to simplify the payment method, because of the bargaining issue that people often found. By this, basically Go-jek adopted Uber’s method that setting rate per kilometer to make users know exactly how much you need to pay. This method makes the payment are more transparent and simple. The important thigs is, to make it more easy and simple for user, Go-jek also came up with Go-pay system, which allow customer to safe their money in Go-pay, and do the transaction through Go-pay so it is not require customer to pay with cash.
