I currently work in a department that the overall communication is very poor among staff members.  My manager and I have a great communication relationship, but department overall is very poor. After reading about “Downward communication”, I believe the problem start with higher management in my department. (Newstrom, 2014) Management fail to relay messages in an understanding way for the staff to comprehend their message, it seems if some managers are talking down to the staff. The communication barrel is already broken once you start benothing your staff in an unwanted tone.

Also, I observed in some of the emails management send out, they may leave out certain manager because they do not want a manager to know or even a staff. For example, if someone send an email at work and multiple managers and staff on the email, I think that receiver should return the email with everyone that was included. In this situation the communication is broken because not everyone knows what is going on. Upward communication between staff and management becomes very noticeable because the two-way flow is broken. (Newstrom, 2014)

As I mention earlier between my manager and I the communication is great. We communicate through email, text, and telephone. My manager is very strict on communication as if my words in my email are not correct he will call me to the office and point out my grammar. The assumption is my manager want to make my message readable and he do not have to ask questions on what I mean.

Most people today and especially the young generation text on cell phones. I for one still text without putting all the emojis and shorthand words. With my daughter and son, I must call them a lot of times because I have no idea what they are talking about when I receive their message. In that case a lot of the communication can be misinterpret.  I feel if you do not want me to receive in a way that you may not want me to, you should text correctly if important. Semantic barriers communication in texting can mean so many different things, especially if you are not informed of all the new symbols the new generation are using. I personally tell my kids to use words when communicating with me through text, because we all will be on the same page.
