Personal Qualities I Need to be a Dentist
Dentists are trained to diagnose, prevent, and treat various problems associated with teeth and mouth. It is the job of the dentist to closely monitor the mouth using various treatments and to properly suggest treatment depending on the diagnosis. Personal qualities and skills will make me successful in my chosen field of work which is dentistry. The personal qualities I share are calmness, trustworthiness, and eye-hand coordination.
One of the personal qualities I have is being calm. Being a dentist it is important to stay calm and keep my patients calm. When it comes to calming effect, or calming someone down I am very good at it. There were many instances where I had to stay calm or had to calm someone down. For instance, two months ago my great grandmother got a surgery done on left ankle. My great grandmother is 89 years old and she had never been to the hospital her entire life. Her left ankle was fully infected due to increase in bacteria so the only way to heal that was to perform a surgery and take all the fluid out. Next morning, my parents and I decided to take her to the hospital. My great grandma said she doesn’t want to go to the hospital because she has never been there before. It is so hard to convince her because she is too stubborn. My parents tired convincing her many times but she just wouldn’t listen. Then, my parents asked me to convince her since she loved me the most in the family. My turn came to convince her but she still wouldn’t listen. Then I straight up told her there’s no way you will ever be able to walk again nor do anything else if you don’t get the treatment done. She kept saying no and I started questioning her that How are you going to go somewhere If you can’t walk? How are you going to go the bathroom and all? It took me a while to convince her but I convinced her and she said, “okay I’ll go the hospital”. I had to stay calm through all this and made sure she is calm. After she got the surgery done, she was getting all kinds of bad thoughts in her mind like “will I be able to walk? What will I do if I can’t walk?” I told her everything will be fine and you’ll definitely be able to walk again. I would also change the subject, joke around and try to entertain through this bad time. My main goal was to keep her calm and stay calm.
Another personal quality I have is that I am trustworthy. Since Dentist work with sharp metal objects in the mouth, it is really important that they are trustworthy. I am very honest and straightforward. There are many occasions where I possessed trustworthiness. For instance, my uncle asked me to count all the change in his piggy bank and deposit it in his savings account. No one would know if I took some of it, since they didn’t know how much was there in the first place. A trustworthy person is honest and I told my uncle how much money was there in his piggy bank without taking any of it. Someone who isn’t trustworthy might take some of the money after counting it, and give the total of what was left to the person who asked them to count it. My uncle has that trust on me, if he didn’t have trust on me he wouldn’t have had asked to me count the money in the first place. Similarly, I believe honesty will play a vital role in my career of dentistry and help me succeed.
