Drinking age should be lowered.

At eighteen years old, there are many responsibilities gained, such as being able to marry, but one cannot drink alcohol at the wedding because United States set the legal drinking age at twenty-one years old. If an eighteen years old is considered as an adult, the legal drinking age should lowered from twenty-one to eighteen years old.

Many people believes that drunk driving is a key fact that leads to highway accident, so by raising the alcohol purchase age to twenty-one can prevent such problem. Although in the past several years statistics shows there are decrease in drinking and driving problem, but it is as a result of many factors not just raising the purchase age of alcohol. These include: education concerning drunk driving, increased seat belt and air bag usage, safer automobile, lower speed limits, free taxi service from drinking establishment, etc.

Others say alcoholism is a serious problem in our society, and a delayed drinking age can help prevent it. But, an unrealistic drinking age regulation is almost impossible to enforce, and it breeds disrespect for the law. A majority of college students under the age of twenty-one consume alcohol but in an irresponsible manner. This is because drinking by these youth is seen as a badge of rebellion against authority and a symbol of adulthood. United States have tried prohibition legislation twice in the past for controlling irresponsible drinking problems, but the law was repealed because it was unforceable and the backlash towards them cause other social problems. Today we are repeating the same thing in the history.

Age is not necessarily an indication of maturity, but is so, America society treats eighteen years old as mature for most purpose; they can vote; they can go away to college; and at eighteen, men must register with Selective Service and available for a possible draft. It is unfair to ask a man to die
