Physical Therapy in the United States is an occupation that is growing by 36%. I, myself, aspire to become a physical therapist one day and am just starting my path on becoming one. To achieve the job that I want to make a living with, I must first go to college and get the degree necessary to practice physical therapy. [pic 3]
There are 3 different degrees:
The Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree (DPT) which is offered in the United States to all new students. To achieve the DPT degree, one must have their bachelors (undergraduate) degree, to start. Then, one must continue to get their DPT degree by completing 3-4 more years of school.
The Master of Physical Therapy Degree (MPT) & the Master of Science in Physical Therapy Degree (MSPT) is no longer offered to any new students.
On average, the duration of professional DPT programs are three years. Some of the classes taken are:
- Physiology
- Biology/Anatomy
- Cellular histology
- Evidence-based practice
- Pharmacology
- Ethics/values
- Management sciences
- Biomechanics
- Finance
- Sociology
- Clinical reasoning
- Endocrine & metabolic
- Musculoskeletal

To get into the professional physical therapy degree without having to earn your bachelor’s degree first, some students can get in, depending on certain variables like GPA.
The key to attending a Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree program (DPT) is to make sure it’s by CAPTE (Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education).
