Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity
Fraternities are becoming more about parties than leadership activities. They are actively causing a negative role in a student's life rather than being a positive involvement. Students involved in fraternities are engaging in frequent consumption of alcohol, which has resulted in poor grades, alcohol, drug abuse, and has even led to accidents and deaths. Fraternities are meant to be held in high regard as leaders in which members share goals and values.
The alumni, students, faculty and university officials are all involved in the structuring of a fraternity, and in this case, they lacked some involvement. Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity has had several repeated alcohol incidents, some causing drug abuse or deaths. When administration or faculty is not clearly involved, students may take advantage of the situation and do things that they normally would not be able to do if proper rules were met and enforced. Students that want to join the fraternity have to do certain things in order to get initiated, some things that may be dangerous or cause harm to them in a way that may not be obvious at the time.
I think that university officials and faculty want to control the fraternity and keep students from drinking and getting poor grades; however they cannot always control those issues. In reality, faculty can only do so much - the rest is in the student's hands. Officials or faculty can set rules and guidelines for the fraternity, but the members can always break them.
The problem in this case is that there is not enough reinforcement of rules and regulations by university officials and faculty in regards to the fraternity and its members. They encourage the fraternity to students because it is supposed to have a positive impact on the student's life. This is not always the instance; in this case it has shown to have a negative influence. Members of Pi Kappa Phi are using their role in the fraternity as a social gathering to party and drink rather than a basis for networking, support, and social interaction. Without proper supervision and reinforcement, students will continue to use the fraternity as a social drinking house.
Universities and colleges prohibit hazing, but it is still occurring throughout this fraternity and many others. Hazing can be very dangerous and students may have to do things they never would have thought about doing, all to get initiated into the fraternity. This creates a negative image for the fraternity and causes rumors to fly throughout the campus about students, some which may not be true.
Alternative 1
Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity was created to be a positive role in the student's life, promoting growth and development. University officials and faculty need to be more involved and reinforce rules for the fraternity to ensure that students are gaining the proper experience from the fraternity. This may help to keep students on the right track, as far as their grades go. If the university is more closely involved in the fraternity, the students may be more reluctant to participate in adverse activities, but may wish to focus on using the fraternity and its resources to impact their life in a positive way.
