The Disney movie “Pocahontas” will always be my favorite version; I watched it countless times as a child. From the start of “The New World”, I noticed many differences vs. the Disney version. John Smith came over on the boat more so a prisoner in “The New World” versus a Captain figure in the Disney movie. In the Disney movie, Pocahontas and John Smith had to sneak around to see each other; it was a very hidden relationship compared to this movie where they spent their time together freely. After reading the information from the website provided, I was also shocked by some of the facts I learned about Pocahontas. In both movie versions, Pocahontas saves John Smiths life and that in fact is not true at all. According to the website provided, it says she would have not been allowed to be there because children could not attend any sort of religious ritual. Pocahontas was in fact married at 14 to a young warrior and soon became pregnant. She seemed to be older, a young woman per say, in both movies when she started to become interested in John Smith. I clearly remember Pocahontas and her raccoon friend that always played together in the Disney movie and she always seemed to have a good and happy life, but the website says she had quite the opposite: a tragic and heartbreaking life. Still, her story is one of my favorites in history and it’s interesting to learn the truth of her life and what she had to endure compared to what I have always been portrayed from the Disney movie and other myths.
