Pro-Live v. Pro-Choice

Abortion is not something that is often talked about, and for the obvious reasons, yet the debate over whether or not abortion should be a legal option still continues to divide us. Since Jan. 22, 1973 when the United States Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision in the Roe v. Wade case declared having an abortion was a “fundamental right”, it has been a controversial issue. This sudden change in the legal status of abortion created a backlash and led to the “pro-life” movement to focus its efforts on influencing the Supreme Court for many years. The worldwide conflict of “pro-life” v. “pro-choice” it will continue to cause controversy among people be for years to come. Since there is no ethical way to decide between the two groups because it is based on a person’s moral values, this paper will give you the details and beliefs surrounding the abortion debate and why everyone should believe in “pro-choice”.

What does it mean to be “pro-life”? Supporters of “pro-life” believe that under no circumstance is abortion okay and that human life begins from the moment of conception and, therefore, abortion is immoral and successfully killing innocent human beings. Their definition of abortion is “the artificial termination of human life at any time from conception to birth”. They believe that if a woman has an abortion, no matter what stage of pregnancy the mother is in, it is still considered a human being so she is committing an act of murder. They are against believing in medical research and often side with their religious beliefs on the sanctity of human life. “Pro- life” activists advocate for a law that makes abortion illegal and controls what women decide to do with their own bodies. Not everyone has the same religious beliefs, and if you do not want to support abortion in your own life then that’s fine, but it shouldn’t be decided for anyone else.

Would you bring a baby into this world where its life would possibly be horrible due to a situation? A fifteen year old girl who made a bad decision, a mother with four children and a uncertain marriage, a med student in the middle of finals, or the victim of rape. Think about people in those types of situations. Economically and socially, women must be able to control their own destinies.

To be “pro-choice” does not mean one is “pro-abortion”. The main argument in “pro-choice” is not essentially that all women should have abortions, but that women should have the choice to have one or not. Supporters of “pro-choice” do not believe that life begins at conception since there is no scientific proof as to when exactly human life begins; it is simply a matter of one’s opinion or religious belief. “Pro-choice” includes those who are personally against abortion (pro-abortion) or feel uncomfortable with it, but who choose to not impose their viewpoints onto all women. They do not advocate abortion over birth- they defend the rights of women to decide for themselves, for the freedom to do what you want to do with your body, respecting other women’s choices and remaining active to keep choices legal. “Pro-choice” supporters believe and work toward preventing unwanted pregnancies and reducing abortion by educating women and youth to ensure they have the necessary resources to raise healthy, happy children. To be “pro-choice” means that you decide, I don’t decide for
