Riordan Manufacturing, a fortune 1000 established in 1991 by Dr. Riordan a professor of chemistry. The company employs 550 people and has projected annual earnings of $46 million and revenues in excess of $1 billion. The corporate headquarters is in San Jose, California, and some of their customers are automotive parts manufacturers, aircraft manufacturers, the Department of Defense, beverage makers and bottlers, and appliance manufacturers. Originally the organizations main focus was research and development and the licensing of existing patents. In 1992 Dr. Riordan obtained venture capital, which he used to purchase a fan manufacturing plant in Pontiac, Michigan. The organizations' focus is Six Sigma, a leading edge that exceeds 9000 ISO standards. They are industry leaders in using polymer materials to provide solutions to the customer's challenges and R&D is the industry leader in identifying industry trends.
The members of Team "B" welcome the challenge to present in detail the assignment discussing strategic capacity planning and lean production for the new process design and supply chain process for the electric fans at Riordan Manufacturing. In 2000, the company expanded its operations into Hangzhou, China, moving the fan manufacturing operations from Pontiac, Michigan to China. The plant operates only as a decentralized unit of Riordan Manufacturing. The plant is a make-to-stock operation in which the future demands for fans are basing this on past sales, worldwide, for the last three years.
