The definition of a drug is a chemical substance used in the treatment, cure, prevention, or diagnosis of disease or used to otherwise enhance physical or mental well-being. A drug is a drug whether it is legal or illegal. Many may argue that some drugs are more dangerous and addictive than others but they ALL fall under the label of drugs.

Crystal meth and crack cocaine are considered life threatening drugs because they known as stimulants, which cause the central nervous system and body functions to speed up, therefore increasing your heart rate putting you at a higher risk of a heart attack. There are other drugs that are stimulants, which include caffeine and nicotine, which are most commonly found in coffee and cigarettes. Heroin is known as a narcotic, which is a highly addictive drug. Other narcotics include methadone, morphine, codeine, Demerol, and vicodin. All of these drugs are legal and can be prescribed by a doctor for “medicinal” purposes.

Recently California has amended the state law of using marijuana for “medicinal” purposes. And I thought it was bad that we allow cigarettes, fully aware that they cause lung cancer. Now you can legally have possession of and use marijuana in California if you have what is known as the Cannabis Club card. The key word there is California, because marijuana is still illegal according to our government. Federal laws will always over-ride state law no matter how sick someone may be.

A depressant is a drug that slows down your body. Some examples of depressants are sleeping pills, valium, and the most famous of them all…alcohol. Might I point out that all of the examples I listed are legal. The legal age for drinking alcohol is 21 and I’m going to assume that 91% of senior high school students are unaware of this, seeing as how studies show 91% have tried alcohol by that time.
