Essay

Many people argue that the purpose of going to schools is to get better jobs in the future; therefore, they believe that specific careers and jobs should be taught at universities, colleges and highschools instead of general subjects. However, I am strongly disagree with this notion.

To begin with, human need to know how the world works as well as a solid base of common knowlegden in order to survive in the daily life. It would seem to be uninformed and ignorant for a normal person to not know about the gravity, the former president of Viet Nam – Ho Chi Minh, how many states there are in the United States or even where the Sun rises. Moreover, general subjects such as geography, physics, chemistry and so on play an important part in enabling students to get some useful skills which will help them to save not only their life but also other people’s. I once read in the Telegraph about a 10-year-old girl named Tily Smith who saved her family and 100 other tourists from the Asian tsunami with the knowledge she obtained from geography class.

A second point is that a great number of jobs require diverse knowledge in different fields. For example, if you work in the journalism, it would be a profound advantage to have a wide range of unserstanding in geography, history or even in sports. In addition, studying about one specific carrer makes it impossible to change to other career. Because young people tend to constantly search for their awn potential and desire, they might like that job today but they might want to do another job the day after. And with basic knowledge gained from general subjects, it would be easier for them to pursue their dream careers as well as have higher chance of success.
