Sex Trafficking

By Zain Ismail

Sex Trafficking is a serious problem in not only the United States but also many other countries around the world such as Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Columbia. Sex Trafficking is the illegal organized coercion of unwilling people (children and adults) to perform sexual acts. Although over 148 countries in the UN have signed a Prevent to Protocol to help prevent the abuse of these persons, sex trafficking is still frequently practiced through the form of prostitution, pornographic films, and works of exotic entertainers. By addressing and solving the causes of sex trafficking we can all help bring an end to this disgraceful business. How can we help prevent this corruption? The prevention of sex trafficking can be achieved through donating to prevent poverty, helping to prevent world hunger, and giving hope to those to who may soon become trafficking victims.

Firstly, sex trafficking can help be prevented with addressing one of its major causes, poverty. Poverty is not only increasing, but it is spreading like a wild fire. The high unemployment rate in the United States for example, is leaving people unable to pay mortgage and eventually leave them on the streets. In India the people of lower cast such as the Untouchables are completely broke and even forced to scavenge for rupees and even their next meal, much less a home. Because of poverty, hunger and lack of hope have risen and become the two other main factors of sex trafficking. Everyone no matter how little or how much can help prevent this cause of poverty through donation organizations such as AKDN, Oxfam, and National Urban League.

In addition, world hunger can also decrease and significantly reduce the frequency of Sex Trafficking. World hunger as with most countries around the world is caused by its social system and its unusually high unemployment rates. In the United States as of June 6, 2013 the unemployment rate has risen to 8.2% leaving over 13 million Americans out of a job. Some say that hunger has nothing to do with this illegal trafficking, but it does when hunger leaves the hungry to resort to this illegal business. World hunger is directly, I repeat directly responsible for sex trafficking and can be prevented by donating and supporting organizations such as Bread for the World, Community Food and Security Coalition, and Feeding America.
