Decisions, Decisions: Should I Enlist in the Army?
In this time of war, enlisting in the U.S. Army is not a decision that should be taken lightly. The U.S army is considered the best army in the world as a result of being uncompromising when it comes to its charge to defend the nation. "The United States Army, major branch of the United States armed forces charged with the preservation of peace and security and the defense of the nation" (United States Army, The. 2006). One example of this is the "War on Terrorism" the U.S. is currently engaged in. In view of that, one must be serious, up to the challenge, and evaluate why he wants to enlist. The army is not for everyone, and some find this out too late.
Let's step into the life of a young man who asks himself "Should I enlist in the army?" He is unemployed and unable to pursue higher education due to financial limitations. Frustrated with the quality of life he can provide for his family, brings him to a crossroad in his life. His reality is to change or become a statistic.
"Since the abolition of the peacetime draft in 1973, duty has become "duty" strictly a matter of personal choice, for men and women alike. And many now choose to see military service as, frankly, bizarre." (Renehan, 2006) Daring to be different he envisions himself serving his country; to join or not to join that is the question. He consults with the local recruiter on how to enlist in the army while researching at his neighborhood library for more information. The recruiters advised to put thoughtfulness into the decision before taking the ASVAB, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, a test used to determine qualification for enlistment. (ASVAB, 2006)
He recognizes that his family and friends will all be affected if he enlists. So the young man weighs his options, turning a significant choice into a crucial decision that takes time and consideration. Bringing about scrutiny from others and the reflection of oneself.
