Skin Deep

The movie Skin Deep was certainly an eye-opener, especially for majorities that have yet to deal with that degree of discrimination on a day to day basis. The film follows a diverse group of college students as they meet and discuss their personal experiences with racial prejudice. Also, the film gives a general background to the upbringing and past of each student so that the audience can see how these factors shape the opinions and views of each person.
As I was watching the movie, I couldn’t help but notice how each races’ primary struggles were so different yet similar. Although most people in the room felt that the discrimination they faced could only be understood by someone of the same race, this injustice was rooted in the same, core issue – racial prejudice. Another eye opener was how easy I found it to relate to many of the students, while others I could barely emphasize with. Fortunately, this film’s main goal is to educate the masses about these kinds of issues so that we can reform a better society. The most polarizing topic was definitely the tension between the majorities and minorities. The majority felt that people should be judged individually while the minorities felt that although that is true, the majorities must realize the passive benefits they get from prejudice despite not being directly involved. This problem hit home for me because I have personally experienced events like this in my life where I have to step back and just gather myself. Even my friends and family sometimes experience the same discrimination when applying for a job or college, whether it’s for or against us, it’s unfair.
Lastly, I emphasize with the student who said he ended up going to a college with very little people of his race. I grew up in a similar setting for elementary through high school and can see how it might be difficult to fit in. All in all, Skin Deep is a well-made film that tackles important issues that can
