When I left my last class at USC to go towards Dorsey High School, I did not know what to expect. Prior to going there, I was given a set of rules about this school. I was told not to wear red or blue and that sometimes there are lock downs at the school. All of this was new to me and I didn't know how I should react once I got there. When I drove up to the school, I saw a line of police cars and a lot of children. I pulled up into the drive way and I made my way to building L where I met up with David Jenkins, a counselor of the after school program. David was a really nice guy who devotes his time into helping the kids involved in the after school program. He showed me around the school and introduced me to the kids who I would be working with in particular. He told me how the majority of all the kids I will be working with are foster kids and that they never had a stable home and life style. While walking in the halls with him, I noticed how all the kids had a lot of respect for him and he would address all of their problems. For example, a boy who was in the program, wanted to play basketball with his friends and asked David for permission, and David asked him if he had finished all his homework. The boy replied by saying no, and David said he had to finish all his homework then he could play. After getting a tour of the places I would work, he took me to a room where a couple of kids were sitting with tutors working on math problems. I sat down and went to work with two girls who sat next to each other. They were both seniors and were getting ready for the high school exit exam. I tried my best to show these girls the right way to answer the problems and I attempted to boost their confidence every time they got the right answer on their own. The girls who I tutored were very nice and they were very open with me. I thought that the kids would be really mean and violent just like in the movies. The other kids who were there were also really nice.
