The HIV or the AIDS viruses has plagued our society for the last twenty years. It was first looked at as a disease but it then started to plague the heterosexual community which then the government started taking action. The government and most Americans did not concern themselves with the AIDS virus at first. People just would not want to get involve in helping a gay disease. This was in the mind of most Americans and even countries aboard. When AIDS started to hit homes in the suburbs the government started to take action. This was not the case when AIDS was infecting minorities in the inner cities. The government did not care too much or showed lack of interest when concerning with minorities in the inner cities. This was a big problem in the fight against the spread of AIDS.
Minorities make up a fraction of the population but the epidemic has hit minorities the most especially African Americans and Hispanics. That is alarming fact and it needs some attention before it starts getting worse. One of the reasons for the high number of people infected with this disease is that the lacks of education minorities receive of this virus. Many minorities do not have the proper education about this virus. Almost half of minorities surveyed, practice unprotected sex. This is just the lack of knowledge minorities have about this topic.
The articles chosen would give an insight of how this virus affects minorities in the inner cities. The articles are surveys done to give the reader the insight of how AIDS affect people in the inner cities. These articles also focus on young people and their lack of knowledge of the topic about safe sex.
Adolescences are the growing group of people affected with this virus and especially adolescences in the inner cities. They are most vulnerable because of the lack of resources in these communities to talk about the issue. The government does not have a lot programs in the inner cities to talk about this virus. This is a big issue because this the leading cause of death for African Americans in this country. African American are the most vulnerable to this virus.
The article, THE INFLUENCE OF SELECTED INDEPENDENT VARIABLES ON AIDS KNOWLEDGE AMONG INNER-CITY AFRICAN-AMERICAN SCHOOL-AGED STUDENTS, gives the reader an idea of the study done in inner cities schools about the lack of knowledge African Americans have on the virus AIDS. The purpose of the study is to determined if gender, grade level respondents discussions of AIDS with a friend or family member influence the knowledge of AIDS adolescents who attended schools in the inner cities. The study was done to African Americans high schools located on the east coast. The study was conducted through a questionnaire given elected information concerning the demographic characteristics along with questions investigating sexual activity drug use attitude towards HIV positive students knowledge about the transmission and perceived threat pf AIDS. In addition respondents were asked questions concerning where they received information about AIDS.
The questionnaire had 39 items and each person had 30 to 35 minutes. The data that was received was confidential. This sample that was given to random students in the public schools in the inner city. The author hypothesis was clear and specific. He wanted to know the knowledge these students had about the virus. He asked about their sexual relationships and if they used protection or not. The survey was done informal. The author was not targeting a specific gender, race religion etc. According to the questionnaire,a good portion of students of color do not practice safe sex. Fifteen percent of the students surveyed practices unprotected sex.
The main point of the article wants the reader to be aware of how much young people do not practice safe sex. The author wants people to be aware of how serious this virus is.
In the article, "Use of Folk Healing Practices by HIV infected Hispanics Living the United States" analyzes a mother view on HIV and AIDS infecting the Hispanics in the inner city.
