Has the over usage of computers and computer games made students fail their courses and drop out semesters? this is the question that is being dealt with in this article by the author Rene Sanchez whom is tryin to provide different answers from different perspectives "should we cut off the usage of computers on campus, or should we ban certain content, or should we limit the usage hours?" different questions arise through this article to determine whether it is actually the reason why students are failing and if it is becoming an addiction or not. Sanchez uses different ways and opinions to support her idea that computers hinders and distract students from being in a good academic level and that it is one of the primary reason why they fail, she supports her opinion by using different opinions that agree with her's. However; although this article provide many valid arguments regarding the usage of computer amongstudents, the author's arguments need to be examined closely due to the existence of false assumptions, weak evidence and logical fallacies.
In this article the author went through some valid convincing points such as the idea of the students using computers alot for different purposes for a long time, this is actually true and very convining as computers and new technologies are becoming parts of pur daily lives whether for working, studing, connecting to the outer world, looking up information or even playing games, the author states at some point that other students use it to get their minds off certain things like stress and that it gives them relief which is another valid point as different people find their relief in different hobbies or certain activities so yes, they use it to distract themselves from whatever the real world is bringing upon them but of course this hinders their academic development or take lots of the time that should have been dedicated to studying or doing research or whatever something useful that would benefit their academic achievment, the author went to the extent of thinking aboutt banning computers or limit the hours of usage as she thinks it's doing them harm more than good saying that is one of the primary things why students drop out or fail.
however the author was not as rightful in some points as they were based on no real data or evidence just to support her her main argument. for example when Richard Wiggins who manages the I.S and teaches computer says "usually these thing are not THAT harmful" what did he mean by not that harmful, he claims falsely that these things are not that harmful, on what measures did he decide that claim, what is the tool he's using to measure the level of harmfulness and saying that harmful indicates that it is harmful to some extent and that shouldn't be the case, why would students have to face harmfulness in the first place and then he goes on saying "it is very easy to get sucked in but it's not always bad" saying that it is not always bad gives the idea that there are already bad cases and the term itself bad varies in its meaning and emphasis from one person to the other, what the author considers bad might be very bad to another person. according to Susan Greenfield who supports this idea in "The telegraph UK journal" says that computers in schools could do more harm than good saying that ignoring the dangers facing the screen generation is a dangerouse approach that cause so much harm.
moreover Jeff Prince, the associate director of counceling at the UC Berekly university says " There can be a real sense of isolation in a large campus, and for young students or new students this seems like a safe, easy way to form relationships" first of all how come would one feel isolated in such a large campus, young stundents especially feel so excited about joining universities in particular for the part of making friends and knowing new people, so a sense of isolation shouldn't be the thing that young stundents would feel in a large university like that and if that was true that some might feel isolated; that's why on campus activities were created especially on the first days of the begining of the educational year, to make students feel oriented and to get to know each other, another thing is that the students should be informed that making online friends is not safe and easy as they think as it subjects them to more dangers than they think, this idea is supported by Julia Glum from "The international business Times" saying that these online relationships subject young people to cyber bullying, fake people who get to pretend someone that they are not as one can actually never know who they are talkin to hidden behind the screen , the idea of being like itself by someone online gets some teens to be addictive that's why the never leave the screen.
The second problem is the weak points that the article handled specifically the usage of weak evidence which made the author's argument not valid first by saying that "Other college officials say that the concern seems exaggerated" the author in that part doesn't specify specific officials instead he says "Other college
