My name is Dr. Angela Allen, 38 years old, graduate from University of Oxford majoring in the field of work place psychology. Besides that, I also act as an independent counsellor for several NGOs and provide my professional expertise to assist them. I also anchor a local stress management session organized by the local municipal on a weekly basis. I have written and published several books including the New York Times Best seller Workplace and you.
Can you explain the behaviour of somebody having a mental illness?
Although WHO(World Health Organization) lists low mood as the defining symptom of depression in the work place, this disorder is more likely to manifest in behaviours such as nervousness, restlessness or irritability and in physical complaints such as a preoccupation with aches and pain. In addition, employee may become passive, withdrawn, aimless and unproductive.
How about sign?
Symptoms of mental health disorders may be different at work place than in any other situations. Although these disorders may cause absenteeism, the biggest impact is in the loss of productivity. Studies suggest that treatment improves work performance but is not a quick fix.
How are you treating patient like this?
Such patients require continuous counselling session with the psychiatrist. Initially, patients are analysed by given several questionnaires that will be used to plot a psychiatric chart model that will be applied throughout the treatment duration. Medication is only subscribed in severe cases, including muscle relaxant and sleeping pills. Several techniques are applied during the session that will be monitored closely for results.
In the suicide case can you explain whether somebody wilfully and deliberately caused his own death or irresistible impulse brought on by the pressure on his job?
Not only in the case of Peter Parker, but generally employees are reluctant or often unwilling to disclose a mental health problem because of how their supervisors, managers or co-workers might react.
