This paragraph from The Magic Barrel can be considered as the key passage because it can teach you about the whole story by just reading that paragraph. In the key passage you learn the Leo is disappointed and upset with the choice that his match maker salzman made for him. Then he realizes that he shouldn't be upset with the match maker because he went himself to look for salzman. Leo chose to have Salzman look for a match for him, yet he realizes that he shouldn't because he doesn't feel he is ready for marriage.
Leo had never loved anyone in his whole life besides his parents and yet he expected someone to do the job for him and discover love for him his first time. Leo was also upset because being on the date that Salzman set up for him with Lily made him question himself. Leo realized he was not as religious as his parents and that he did not love god because he did not even love man. Leo did not love anyone or anything besides his mother and father but was out seeking for marriage and expected to not find a disappointment along the way.

This key passage informs you that Leo is a man who is looking for marriage and has decided to look for a matchmaker to help him find the perfect bride which he can marry. He hires a man named Salzman who sets him up with an older woman (Lily H.). The date between Lily and Leo does not work out and in fact he is irritated by her and all the questions she asked him on their date. Although the date between Lily and him did not work he realizes that his irritation came from him revealing himself to her as a person he never knew he was. Leo sees himself finally as he truly is because of her question and it upsets him because he is not satisfied with the person he truly is.
