The Magical Key

By: Lauren Tsafatinos

There was once a girl named Violet Thomas who loved to sit in the twilight and listen to bedtime stories. As soon as the sun would set she would crawl into bed and wait for her Dad to sit down beside her and begin a story. Violets Dad never read stories from a book, but always told them from his heart as if he had lived each magical story.

Often Violets dad Peter would dim the lights in Violet’s room and create playful hand shadows on the wall to help bring his stories to life. That was part of the fun of each story and Violet never knew what would appear next, majestic bird, an elephant or Violet’s favourite, a dog named Growler. Each shadow character cast upon the wall was included in an adventurous story.  When Violet’s Dad began to tell her bedtime story she knew right away that the story tonight was somehow different. Her Dad began telling her if she ever found the end of the rainbow that she would discover the magical key. “And what is the key for?” Violet asked. “What will it open?” “That nobody knows,” her Dad replied. “You will have to find that out for yourself.” Violet thought about this for a while and then slowly closed her big blue eyes and fell fast asleep. It was not surprising that when she fell asleep she immediately began to dream about the magical key. You may think that all the stories Violets Dad had told her are make-A believe, but in reality their home in Wisteria Lane stood on the borders of Fairyland. In Fairyland, anything is possible, and everything is opposite. Animals talk, and people become better looking with age. The keeper of the magical key hides it very well by always moving the rainbow from place to place in case anyone ever came looking for it. The next evening getting ready for bed Violet was her curious self once again. “Have you ever known anyone who has found the magical key?” Violet asked. “Yes. I once knew a man who found it.” Violet’s Dad pulled the covers up around her chubby cheeks and snuggled her into bed. “What did he do with the key?’ Violet asked. “He was a wise man and would not tell me much about it.” “What was the key like and why does it come to be at the end of the rainbow?” “You would be a lucky girl Violet if you were ever to find where the key fell. Many believe it will give great fame and fortune and others believe it will take them to great far away lands. You are still a young girl sweetheart but always remember life is an adventure.” Violet did not understand the last part of what her Dad had said but she knew that her Dad was wise. Violet fell fast asleep that night once again dreaming about the magical key. A few weeks later after Violets conversation with her Dad she stared out her bedroom window at the clouds hovering over Wisteria Lane. She thought the clouds looked very beautiful, a few minutes past and Violet could not believe her eyes! A huge colourful rainbow appeared! “The magical key!” she said to herself. Right away Violet ran downstairs, tied up her sneakers and was out the door. As Violet entered the forest area behind her house, the trees and bushes opened up for her. Violet could not believe what was happening, she thought she was dreaming. As the sun started to go down the colours of the rainbow started to grow brighter as Violet got closer. As Violet began to walk closer to the rainbow, it disappeared. With confusion Violet took a step back and there the rainbow was again. The rainbow was so big Violet could not see where the rainbow ended and the sky started. All that was on Violet’s mind was how she might find the magical key. Violet mapped out in her mind the are that covered the base of the rainbow so she would know where to look if the rainbow disappeared again. It had grow very dark in the woods but the rainbow was still visible but the minute the moon rose the rainbow disappeared. No matter where Violet moved herself she could no longer see the rainbow. Violet discovered that the base of the rainbow was beside a big bed of green moss. She decided to lay down in the forest and wake in the morning with a good chance of finding the magical key. The bright morning sun woke Violet up and she could not believe what she opened her eyes to see. It was the magical key. The key was pure gold and had massive diamonds and jewels all over and one large ruby that shined red as ever. She cautiously touched the key and immediately felt the magic it possessed. She could not believe she was holding the magical key her Dad had told her about! Violet sat there for a while admiring the beauty of the magical key. She then hopped up and realized the key was no use to her if she did not know what lock the key belonged to, her dad did not tell her what the key opened. Violet began to get frustrated but then she saw through the trees in the forest the colourful light of the rainbow and began to run towards it. Right beside where Violet was discovering the magical key lived Violet’s friend Angie. Angie was enjoying her morning looking for frogs in the forest area in her back yard when she saw Violet running through the trees. “Violet hey! Where are you going?” she called out. But Violet was so focused she did not hear her call. Angie began to follow Violet to make sure she was okay and not in any trouble.
