Titration Lab Report
Purpose: To determine the molarity of the H2SO4 solution by performing a titration using a 1.00 M NaOH solution
Supplies: Buret mounted on stand, Funnel, Beaker of 0.100 M NaOH solution, 15.00 mL pipette and bulb, Phenolphthalein indicator, Beaker of unknown H2SO4 concentration, 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask
Procedure
1. Fill the Buret with 0.100 M NaOH that is provided to you, stop between the 0.00 mL mark and the 5.00 mL mark.
2. Place the beaker filled with NaOH under the buret and allow air bubbles to escape from the buret, to do this open your stopcock; while doing this procedure your NaOH should be above 10.00 mL mark.
3. Record the precise date of the NaOH, results shall be placed on the table; make sure to round to two decimal places.
4. Pipet 15.00 mL OF H2SO4 into an Erlenmeyer flask.
5. Add 3-4 drops of the phenolphthalein indicator to the H2SO4 in the beaker
6. Place the Erlenmeyer flask under the NaOH buret
7. Open the stopcock to allow around 1 mL of the NaOH to enter the flask while continuously swirling the flask.
8. Observe any color changes
9. Continue to add the NaOH while swirling the flask
10. “Important”; when the solution reaches a faint pink color that has persisted for 20 seconds while the swirling the flask, you have officially reached your endpoint. Be careful not to overshoot the endpoint, a key indicator is if the solution stays dark pink/purple.
11. Record your result in the data table.
12. Pour the solution out and repeat the titration again
13. Improve your results in the second and third trial, subtract 1 mL from the original quantity used in trial one. Add this amount of NaOH quickly in trial 2.
14. Allow the solution to mix thoroughly.
15. Continue titrating by adding NaOH, stop once you reach the endpoint.
16. Once you complete the lab, clean up your workstation, make sure to clean the glassware thoroughly.
17. Remove your goggles and wash your hands thoroughly.
18. Wait for further instructions to be given by your teacher.
Data Table:
Trials Trial one Trial two Trial three
Final Volume NaOH (mL) 18.20 mL 16.60 mL 22.90 mL
Initial Volume NaOH (mL) 0.30 mL 0.20 mL 0.50 mL
