Afterthought
As I sit here on this desk I write this article not only for Mr Underwood but Maycomb county itself. I refuse to accept the stereotypical opinion that mankind is so tragically oblivious to the discrimination of black men and women. Was me taking this case really worth it, knowing that a white man’s word was favored over a black mans? Was it worth my children not being able to go to school without being discriminated against? But, as I’ve been told throughout my life, I know that everything happens for a reason. If there’s any good that has come from this, it is that in life you may not win every battle but you must show courage by being able to stick with your convictions and do the right thing, even when the whole world criticizes and torments. It’s important to be willing to bear the onslaught and keep your head held high. As I tell myself each and every day, to confront ignorance with knowledge, bigotry with tolerance, and isolation with the outstretched hand of generosity, I hope my kids will live their life with this philosophy to lend a helping hand to all, even if the odds are against them. As father Abe once said, “all man are created equal. Racism is taught in our society; it is not automatic. It is learned behavior toward persons with dissimilar physical characteristics”. in deep thought of the Tom Robinson case I think of forgiveness. I think of how I can show the courage to forgive mayella Ewell for her wrong doings. Most people in this world would hold a grudge on her for a lifetime. But anyone can hold a grudge, it takes a person with character to forgive. I could never really understand Mayella’s actions, but it wasn’t until I put myself into her shoes, that was when I could really understand things from her point of view. If there is anyone who puts themselves in the shoes of others its tom Robinson. Finding himself accused of rape because he showed a little bit of empathy. I truly admire that man. he was such a good person; was to considerate of others. Tom Robinson was convicted of a crime he did not do; his life was lost because he was considerate of a white woman. Now if that’s what justice is I have no hope in this world. Law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and when they fail in this purpose they become the dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress. I often try not to think of the negatives in this world but I ponder on all of the ways the world is wrong. To me, I just can’t grasp why all folk can’t just get along and forget about this damn skin color we all came here in birth leave in death. Remember, we all bleed the same blood. I speak not for myself but for those without voice, those who fight for their rights. their right to live in peace, their right to be treated with dignity, their right to equality of opportunity, their right to be educated. This whole imbalance of equality has been bathed in blood. Tom Robinsons is the latest; and it won’t be the last.
