Tracker by Gary Paulsen

The story is about a 13 year old boy named John who works on his grandparents’ farm. They live in a cabin in the woods that’s located on the farm. John is a quiet boy who likes to work hard and dreams a lot of hunting. John works hard for his grandparents to help them with everything they have to do to live.

John’s grandfather is sick and dying, so John has to help do things that his grandfather is unable to do. Johns grandfather has a cancer that has no cure.  John helps with milking cows and lets the horses out in the fields during the day. At night time, John puts the horses away and spreads manure in the fields to fertilize it.

One night, John’s grandfather was able to help with the fertilizing, so he and John were working by the moonlight. John looked over towards the woods one time and saw a deer standing at the edge of the woods. He could see her breathing through her nostrils because it was cold and the moon was shining on her. They looked at each other for a while and then the deer took off. John thought about shooting the deer because his grandfather had been teaching him about hunting. He learned all the secrets of hunting and his grandfather told him that he had to connect with it, to become the deer in his mind and in his soul.

When it was time for John to go hunting for meat for the family, he packed what he needed such as sandwiches, a drink and his gun. John went into the woods and began following deer tracks when he looked up and saw one. He took him a while to realize that it was the deer he had seen the night that he was working with his grandfather. The deer stood there and stared at John and he had a clear shot to shoot her, but he wasn’t able to. He thought the deer was beautiful and since the deer didn’t try to run away, he realized that the deer remembered him too. Finally, the deer ran away and John decided to keep tracking her. He tracker her for miles and miles and there were a couple times that he had the chance to shoot her, but didn’t.
