I have recently been selected to participate in a massive global undertaking with the company American Intellectual Union (AIU). The company has assembled a team of researchers in the United States and around the world to study job satisfaction. The study will require that we take a look and examine acquired data, analyze the results, and share the results with groups of other researchers in an effort to better understand what affects job satisfaction with employees of companies. We will take surveys of our selected candidates in an effort to understand how well job satisfaction can motivate an individual to succeed at their job of employment. We understand that job satisfaction is important to companies because it provides managers with all the insight needed to understand the working relationships they hold with their fellow employees when dealing with this issue.
I have chosen to use the data from Extrinsic Job Satisfaction column to base my analysis on. This data will be extracted from 31 different individuals in an attempt to better understand how outside job influences affect employees when it comes to job satisfaction. Some of the external factors which affect job satisfaction are office location, working with colleagues, your own office space, your work hours, training provided by the company itself and opportunities for job advancement. This data when analyzed should enlighten the management teams as to how things can be improved and in what direction the company is going in (Sullivan III, 2004).
When dealing with qualitative and quantitative data, some measures are not applicable. Qualitative numbers can not be expressed as numbers because the data has no relevance to the information that we need to acquire such as gender, age, race or religious beliefs. Quantitative data can be expressed in numbers which is why I chose the extrinsic column to assess because we can better understand from this research what affects employees' job satisfaction from external forces. Only quantitative data can be expressed statistically. This means that more rigorous assessments of the data are possible (Cortland, 2004). We asked 31 individuals what they thought about in terms of external job affairs from a scale of 1 through 7, with 1 being least satisfied and 7 being most satisfied. Our results were as followed:
Column X X- XBAR squared deviation
The mode is 6. 6 appears 12 times
4 -0.8 0.64 in our data set in column x.
4 -0.8 0.64
5 0.2 0.04 The median is 7. 7 is the value that
5 0.2 0.04 is 50% above and 50% below.
6 1.2 1.44
5 0.2 0.04 The mean is 4.8. When we add all
6 1.2 1.44 of the values together, the total is
7 2.2 4.84 147.5. We have 31 values so we
6 1.2 1.44 Divide the total by the number of
2 -2.8 7.84 values, which is 147.5 / 31 = 4.8
1.5 -3.3 10.89
5.5 -0.7 0.49 N = 31
6 1.2 1.44 Mean = 4.8
2 -2.8 7.84 Sum of Column x = 147.5
4 -0.8 0.64
7 2.2 4.84 To get the variance we divide the
2 -2.8 7.84 sum of column 3 by the number of
6 1.2 1.44 values, which is 91.49 / 31 = 2.95
2 -2.8 7.84
2 -2.8 7.84 We then take the square root of our
6 1.2 1.44 variance to get our standard
6 1.2 1.44 deviation which sq of 2.95 = 1.72
6 1.2 1.44
6 1.2 1.44
3 -1.8 3.24
6 1.2 1.44
2.5 -2.3 5.29
6 1.2 1.44
5.5 -0.7 0.49
