Essay Preview: Using Emoji Is online Communication Is a Sign of Immaturity
Using emoji is online communication is a sign of immaturity. Discuss both sides of the issue.
With rapidly evolving technology a new type of communication has found its way: emoji. Although there are many opponents of this new internet meme, using emoji can be fun and it’s a step forward in technology and communication.
Many of opponents of this new wave of communication consider using emoji a sign of immaturity. Firstly, they would debate that it’s destroying language, and that younger people nowadays don’t know how to express their feeling through the written word which is killing their brain evolvement and human desire for discovery. That brings people to think that we’re evolving backwards rather than forward, as they are coming to associate emoji to hieroglyphics used by ancient Egyptians more than five thousand years ago. Secondly, people have come to connect using emoji with immaturity and laziness and think its rude when on their rather long text, other person responds only with little yellow smiley face. For all these reasons, foes of this new wave of communication are saying they would rather stick to Queen’s English then try their luck with emoji.
On the contrary, I consider emoji a step forward in online communication. They are very easy and fun to use, considering there are various collections of smiley faces, animals, food and whatnot. But we must remember that emoji are not replacement for words, they are replacement for body language that can’t be conveyed through the screen. In addition, emoji are just a sign of technology evolution, just as Twitter, Facebook, Internet, computer was before them. Therefore, we shouldn’t be giving this much attention, as emoji are just a way to make our online communication more colorful and fun.
To sum up, emoji are just fun little pictures which we should consider a step forward in online communication, but as every other Internet meme, they will have their foes.
