Introduction

Verizon Communications is a telecommunications company that was formed in 2000. Verizon came into existence as a result of the acquisition of GTE by Bell Atlantic on June 30, 2000, representing one of the largest mergers in United States business history. On April 18, 2004, Verizon Communications became one of the thirty companies that are components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Verizon Communications agreed to acquire MCI on February 14, 2005. The MCI acquisition resulted in Verizon temporarily being the largest communications company in the United States; however, currently AT&T is the United States' largest provider of telephone services (local and long distance), DSL internet service, and wireless service.

Verizon offers a variety of services, including voice, video, data, wireless, and directory operations. Several types of land line services are offered by Verizon Communications, ranging from POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) to VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). The name of Verizon's VoIP service is VoiceWing; this service enables customers to receive telephone service via their broadband Internet connection. Data services offered by Verizon include Verizon Online DSL, which is a digital subscriber line, and Verizon FiOS Internet, which is a FTTP (Fiber to the Premises) service utilizing fiber optic cable. Verizon also utilized fiber optic cable for some of its video services, including FiOS Video, which is a video service that delivers digital video and music channels, including high-definition channels. Superpages is a directory operations division of Verizon Communications.
