Digital media is a kind of new media relative to traditional media. In the past few decades, people get information mainly from newspapers, televisions and broadcasts. However, as a direct communicating method in the modern society, digital media has become a main channel of getting and sharing information for individuals, corporations and governments.
With years of development of computer and internet technology, media is gradually changing from the traditional transfer of texts and images to digital audios and videos. In addition, the widespread use of personal computers and smartphones also promotes the revolution of digital media. People can view and share information at any time and at any places. Digital media makes it easier and more convenience for people to acquire and share information.
It is no doubt that the digital media will evolve continuously and will have some impacts on the media landscape. The digital media can offer a platform of storage, management, interaction of media programs and information.
Firstly, it will cause the revolution of broadcasts and televisions. It can help develop some other value added services like video on demand and digital tourism system.
Secondly, the development of digital media will affect business corporations and governments. For example, governments can use digital media to provide online consultant service and interact with citizens. Corporations can use digital media to promote brand recognition, interactive experiences of their products with consumers. The use of digital media will not only help reduce costs but also spread information in a quick and easy way.
Next, it can change the way of learning. With the help of digital media, colleges and universities can develop distance education and expand the teaching scope. For instance, the online courses of many universities make it possible for worldwide students to learn what they are interested in. Some American experts also point out that digital media can help students “become civically engaged, allow them to collaborate with peers worldwide, and empower them to direct their own learning.” (Digital Media 2013)
