1. Remember SQI:

A. S-State your point: Thom Gillespie believes that violent video games can be useful for teaching ethics in his classes.

B. Q-Quote from the article: In his article “Violent video games can promote an understanding of human nature” (2002), he states that discussing video games in his class “is a wildly enlightening experience for both myself and my kids” (p. 37).

C. I-Interpret what the quote means or how it is relevant to your point: This shows that Gillespie finds video games to be valuable for teaching.

So your quote might look like this:

Thom Gillespie believes that violent video games can be useful for teaching ethics in his classes. In his article “Violent video games can promote an understanding of human nature” (2002), he states that discussing video games in his class “is a wildly enlightening experience for both myself and my kids” (p. 37). This shows that Gillespie finds video games to be valuable for teaching.

2. You don’t always need to quote. You should also use paraphrases. You do this similarly to quoting (SQI), but instead of quoting, you paraphrase. So you should use the SPI formula:

A. S-State your point: On the other hand, Jack Thompson believes that violent video games are not useful for society.

B. P-Paraphrase from the article: The only use for video games he mentions in his article “Violent video games promote violence” (2003) is the U.S. Defense Department using video games to train soldiers to kill.

C. I-Interpret what the paraphrase means or how it is
