QUESTION :

Most countries are attempting to enhance the quality of life of their citizens by focusing on the economic development of the country. In the process life quality might be raised at the expense of social values. Still people think that technological process is considered to be more important than anything else. Do advantages of the canonical development outweigh disadvantages?

ANSWER:

There is no country in the world, which is untouched by the phenomenon of technology and quality of life. Recent studies indicate that this phenomenon is likely to accentuate in the coming decades, considering the ground realities of the modern world. Increasingly laid out for all to see and fast becoming a fixture of many a discussion s is an issue that pertains to the relative significance of life quality and technology. This essay shall look at both sides of the issue and argue that the benefits of improving the quality of life far outweigh any meager benefits the latter might proffer.

A quick perusal of the issue at hand would throw up a surfeit of seminal reasons supporting the perspective that technology is much beneficial to the society. Firstly, technology has brought the world much closer by the innovation in communication and by cutting down the travel time between countries. The state –of- the -art household electrical products have made our lives easy and hassle free, especially the elderly who can now live a life of dignity and independence, thanks to technology. Also the increasing use of CCTV’s and other security devices around the world has made our streets a lot safer. It is not uncommon now for women to go shopping even in the late evenings. The widespread use of computers has increased the workplace productivity and efficiency making the developing economies more competitive in the world market. To top it all, the importance the society gives to technology is also reflected in the pay scale of those engaged in this field which often runs into millions.

However if we are honest about it, we might acknowledge that an ill effect of technology has been cultural erosion that has led people to become desensitized both emotionally and morally. How often do we read in newspapers appalling reports of broken families, teenage pregnancies, and juvenile delinquencies- all because of our constant exposure to technology, which only reminds us of our failures as human beings, as we boast of our conquest over the materialistic world!

Many people on the other side of the divide feel that improving the quality of life by promoting economic growth of the country plays a more pivotal role in our lives for an array of reasons. To begin with, Economic growth is the
