PRODUCTION PROCESS
INTRODUCTION
• The project production flow is an example of
an intermittent production system.
• In Project Production, a company accepts a
single, complex order or contract.
• The order must be completed within a given
period of time and at an estimated cost.
WHERE IS PROJECT PRODUCTION
APPLICABLE?
• The project production process is applicable in
the construction of:
– Dams
– Airports
– Roads
– Buildings
– Large ship building
– Rocket building
AN EXAMPLE (ROAD CONSTRUCTION)
• Site Planning and Preparation
– Land survey teams will map and set control lines
running the entire length of the road
– Reference points are created along the length of
the road so as to guide the construction crew
– Vegetation is cleared and obstructions are
removed
• Installation of underground utilities
– Storm drains are installed
– New pipping system is installed to connect with
existing drainage
– Supports of street and road light are installed
– All utilities are checked if they are functioning
properly
• Actual road construction begins
– Curbs are constructed
– Asphalt is laid down
• Landscaping and surface markings
– Landscaping is done
– The road is marked
• Site cleanup
– The site is cleaned up
– Unused resources are removed from the site
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROJECT
PRODUCTION SYSTEM
• 1. No flow
– The resources are brought to the site thus, there is no flow
in the process. THIS IS BECAUSE THE PROJECT CANNOT BE
MOVED
• 2. The requirement of resources is not the same (it
varies).
– Generally, the resource requirement at the beginning is
low.
– Then in mid of production, the requirement increases.
– Finally, it slows down when the project is near its
completion phase.
