With the education system the way it is today, it boggles my mind how some students still struggle just to graduate. There are many factor that contribute to this, but I believe that there are three that stick out the most. Television, Hollywood/upper class and finally, parental involvement (or lack their of). These three issues impact a child's impressionable mind the most. In my opinion all three need to spend more time informing the youth of America about the importance of a good education. With positive influence towards the education system for children's role models there is almost zero chance of failure.
All things are good in moderation but we as Americans and especially children have made it a part of every day life. Kids know what shows are on and at what times. This makes kids feel obligated to watch them. They don't want to miss an episode so they can keep in touch. The next day they can't wait to talk about it with friends at school. "Hey how's it going did you see..."; "Do you want to come over later and watch..." What children should be saying is, "Hey was number four as hard for you as it was for me?", or "Did you study for the test?". Television not only cuts down on the time children could be doing homework or studding it has also turned into apart of their social life. This is the negative effect television has on education. While a social life is important, education should be every child's top priority.
Hollywood and the "Wealthy" are also playing a large roll in children's lack of interest in school. On many channels and on magazines we see actors and the wealthy. What we don't see is how they got there or any sense of appreciation for what they have. Their glamorous life stile is flaunted for everyone to see and many of them take it for granted. Many of the celebrities are more than willing to flash there money, luxury cars, and million dollar homes but what they are also flashing there lack of respect for what they have. For example "Sweet Sixteen" a show on MTV that shows elaborate birthday parties paid
for by their rich parents. These children get everything a person could ask for, party or otherwise, and have no respect or thanks for there parents. It shows children that they can just expect certain things from life and not have to work for it, or instant gratification. It doesn't end there we also see all of the tabloids of the celebrities and how they were arrested or have drug addictions and then all they receive is a slap on the wrist for it. Turn the page and it is an apology letter to the fans which is also a promotion for a new movie or album. All they are lead to believe is that no matter what you do you can get away with it and there are no consequences. This fails to teach children that you have to have a solid education to achieve your goals in life.
