Assessment Criteria

Guidance

  1. Describe the structure and function of the cardiovascular system.

1.2   Explain how the cardiovascular system is specialized and the cells adapted for its role in the human body

Use hand drawn diagrams to help you with the following;

  • Describe the structure of arteries, veins and capillaries and relate this to their function.
  • Describe the external and internal structure of the heart.
  • Explain why the left ventricle has a thicker muscular wall than the right ventricle.
  • What is meant by double circulation?
  • Describe blood flow through the heart during the cardiac cycle.
  • What is the role of valves in the heart?
  • Describe how cardiac muscle is adapted for its role in the human body.
  • Describe the stages in the cardiac cycle and how it is controlled. Include the roles of the SAN, AVN, bundle of His, and Purkyne fibres.
  • What do the stages in an ECG trace represent?
  • How is the frequency of the heart beat controlled?

  1. Describe the structure and function of the respiratory system.

2.2   Explain how the respiratory system is specialized and the cells adapted for its role in the human body.

Use hand drawn diagrams to help you with the following;

  • Describe the pathway moved by air from the trachea to the alveoli.
  • Include a labelled diagram of a section through the trachea showing the location of cartilage and ciliated epithelial cells.
  • Include a diagram of ciliated columnar epithelial cells. How are these cells specialised for their function?
  • What is the role of the goblet cells?
  • What is the role of the cartilage?
  • How and why do the structure of the bronchi and bronchioles differ from the trachea?
  • Include a diagram to show how alveoli and associated blood capillaries are organised. What type of cells make up the walls of the alveoli and blood capillaries?
  • How are the alveoli and blood capillaries adapted to increase the rate of gas exchange?
