The draft is a very controversial topic in the United States. There are many people that are for it, and against it. The draft is known as the Selective Service System today. Young men between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register so that the draft can be easily resumed at any time. As of right now the military is all volunteer but if there was ever a need for more people in it, then the draft would be brought back. I am against the military having a draft.
Many people find the draft to be unfair. One reason it has been called unfair is because many lower class people get drafted because the wealthy are able to find ways to get around it. One way people can get around it is to join the National Guard. People join because then it’s less likely that they will be sent overseas or be put into any dangerous situations. George W. Bush was said to have done this during the Vietnam War. Another way that people are able to get around it is if they have a medical reason.
I think that the draft is not needed because the army we have now is good enough to handle any problems. “We’ve proven over the years that even in the all-volunteer force, we can recruit and train sufficient numbers to meet almost any end-strength that our nation has set for us other than all-out world war” says Jim Carey, the chairman of the National Defense Committee. “And at a time in history when we have the largest and most effective armed force of any nation and are the only Super Power on the planet -- why would anyone even think there is a need for a return to the military draft?” There are a lot of members in our military and there really is no need because if anything really bad happened we would be able to take our troops out of all the countries that they are stationed in all over the world to help out with whatever the threat may be.
Another reason I think that the draft should not be brought back is because it can interfere with our lives. Right now I am going to college and if I was to get drafted I would have to stop going to school and then attempt to try and continue school when I would come back. I feel that it would be hard for me to stop going to college and then try and go back to school after fighting in a war. All of my plans for my future would get messed up and I would probably have to try and find a new career to pursue. I am planning on pursuing a career with U.S. Customs and I am supposed to start a co-op program at the age of 19 and if I was to get drafted then I wouldn’t be able to join the program and then I wouldn’t be
